Roy Rogers Pop-Out Cards
Post Cereals distributed these Roy Rogers Pop-Out Cards in 1953. There are 36 cards in the set, each measuring about 2-1/4" by 3-1/4".
This is a smart but often overlooked little trading card set that was not issued with gum, but instead came in boxes of Post cereals during 1953. The cards feature a central image on the front, and are die cut so that kids can 'pop out' or separate part of the image so that it can stand out in a crude 3-D fashion from its background. In the example card image at right, the child could carefully separate the image of the dog Trigger at the scored line surrounding him, and then display the card in such a way that the background image of Roy and the desert rocks will sit back a bit.
The card fronts feature a piece of color artwork of one or more characters, surrounded by a white border and die-cut around the central image. The card backs feature the card number and caption, as well as a brief block of text describing the image depicted. Also, instructions are given (complete with a small line-drawing illustration) describing how to pop-out the card image. At the bottom is an ad for the entire series of 36 cards.
The American Card Catalog number for this set is F278-19.
Value: Individual cards from this set, in Excellent condition, command a price of about $20.00 each, with certain cards bringing as much as $30.00 each. A full set of 36 will command a price of about $800.00.
